San Diego Trip

Our recent trip to San Diego was full of many firsts for Willamina.
  • First flight
  • First swim
  • First beach experience
  • First trip to the zoo

She seemed to enjoy most of them, at least at the beginning. Some went on a little too long for her liking. We had a great time on the trip. The 3 of us had a couple of days to explore San Diego and the surrounding area before the rest of the family arrived. Our exploration included a lot of walking and a crash course in the San Diego public transportation system when I thought I couldn't walk anymore. These days were probably the hardest on Willa because we were out and about all the time. 3 meals a day in restaurants is hard with a baby- especially one that has missed her naps.

Once the rest of the family showed up we got moved into a 3 story beach house. It was an amazing house and so much easier than a hotel. Willa had a nice quiet downstairs room where she could get away from the hustle and bustle. It was great to just be able to relax and hang out with everyone. We split up for little outings- walks along the boardwalk, boogie boarding, roller coaster rides, and adventures to the airport. Friday night's party at the house was informal and easy, and the reception Saturday was beautiful. I was glad that Taran and Cindy got to see a little happier Willa. When they came to visit in June she was a little out of sorts the whole time.

Traveling with a baby is a whole different world- no longer do we travel lightly. I did enjoy getting to board the plane first. I felt a lot of guilt for turning her routine up-side-down. It breaks my heart to see her so tired and wound up that she can't fall asleep. Also having her with us made me feel a lot of responsibility to the other people around us- nobody likes to be around a crying baby. I know that her family loves her happy or sad, but as her sole source of nourishment and primary caregiver it is my job to keep her from putting a damper on the festivities. Lucky for me Willa is a resilient and adaptable baby for the most part and was happy to be included a very special family celebration.
